Lack of Intelligence at the CBC – Intelligence, jPod and MVP cancelled

It appears that the axe has fallen and CBC has cancelled some of it’s (at least in my opinion) best series. Judging from comments and articles at various sites, it seems that I’m not the only disappointed viewer out there either.

Loss of Intelligence

As I had eluded to in an earlier post, CBC has cut my favourite show Intelligence along with recently introduced shows jPod and MVP. Despite having very little promotion, Intelligence was managing to consistently pull in a respectable 350,000 viewers. International broadcasters have also come knocking looking to syndicate the critically acclaimed show. While 350,000 viewers is not a blockbuster success compared to Rick Mercer pulling in over a million viewers per episode, it still is a sizable audience considering that number 30 in the top 30 programs which include all of rebroadcast American shows like American Idol, rings in at around 800,000 viewers.

Lights out in the jPod

My other disappointment is the cancellation of jPod. Even after being slated for the horrible Friday night slot, jPod was pulling in almost 300,000 viewers. Pretty good for a quirky show aimed at a more specific and targeted demographic. I must admit that it took a bit of time to warm up to it but it has turned into a show I really enjoy. I highly doubt that jPod would appeal to a mass audience but for attracting younger viewers to the CBC I think that it did quite well. I was starting to wonder how the plot might evolve beyond the Douglas Coupland novel but I guess now I’ll never find out. Shame…..

Are ratings the only goal?

There is a debate about whether ratings should be the only criteria used by the CBC since it is a public broadcaster which does has a different mandate than other private broadcasters. Heck if ratings are all that matter, why doesn’t the CBC just re-broadcast more crappy reality shows from south of the border that have “mass-appeal”. I’m sure that there will always be a spot in the ratings for yet another “I can’t sing/dance/do anything but vote for me because I’m from your region/province/city” show. I’m sure that re-runs of The Simpsons still bring in viewers too.

Then again, if only the Toronto Maple Leafs had a better team on the ice this year….

What does the future hold???

As John Doyle from the Globe and Mail wrote : “You’ve got to question CBC’s intelligence“.

Maybe I’ll have to get used to watching the boring, predictable good guy, bad guy everything wrapped up in an hour shows like Law & Order or CSI. Then again, maybe I should just give up on television altogether.

Update (March 26): Perhaps there is another reason for the cancellation of Intelligence? There may also be a sliver of hope left for the series as well… just not at the CBC. Haddock mentions his critically acclaimed Intelligence series just might be back for a third season. I hope so.

  2. CBC is rebroadcasting the first season of jPod over the summer (Thursdays 8pm, starting June 19). We believe that improved ratings can save the show. Please tune in and spread the word! For more information:

  3. I used to watch cbc faitfully then I bought my own satellite dish and had the universe at my fingertips. CBC hsd to fight with the Sopranos, BBC Canada, Dexter and PBS. I still watched Da Vinci’s Inquest and then, even better and more gripping, INTELLIGENCE. Now, I have to wonder what the hell CBC is doing. Basically, I’ve better things to watch than Hockey Wives and reruns of AirFarce and more of the same-old, same-old from Rick Mercer. What a boring bunch of farts the CBC have become. Chris Haddock, if you can take it elsewhere – DO IT! It’s still a Chris Haddock production wherever you put it.

  4. CBCs intelligence was absolutely fabulous. For once in my lifetime I was actually tuning into the CBC to watch a drama. Who would have thought. It was so good it had me and my wife wanting more after each and every episode. We would laugh that all we had to look forward on TV this fall was Intelligence. I hope the CBC comes to their (political) senses and wake up. The fact that the show had over a third of a million viewers per episode is staggering considering the advertisement it got. If any other Canadian network is listening – do yourself a favor and pick this show up. You can’t go wrong.

  5. I just found the series in Dallas, Tx and I loved it. I got to see both seasons and was so upset to read that the series was canceled. This is such a good show and it really tells the behind the scenes of government and informants etc. I figured before I found out it was the last show that the next show would be that Jimmy lives of course. Dante actually had his guys shoot Jimmy knowing that it was the perfect time as everyone would think that it was the Americans. Well, we’ll never know. Shame!

  6. This was an excellent series. Too bad CBC was not as intelligent. This could have easily gone on for 5 to 6 years.

  7. Hello!

We found this on Netflix last year and was mesmerized… Before you know we were watching THE last episode. What A Great Show!!! The Smartest show we have seen in a very long time…. The music score was haunting and top knotch. It would have been great if this show had been picked up… It had at least 4 more good years of story telling.. Very Sad..

  8. Its been off the air for quite some time but Chris is back with six new episodes of X-Files. For those of you who don’t know Chris was the producer of the original X-Files. Quite a great producer and one with great ideas! We miss him back here in Vancouver. Dave

  9. Wow, can’t believe they cancelled this show after 2 seasons!! This was an EXCELLENT series & wonderfully written! The show actually reminded me of “The Wire”! Sad to know there is no season 3!
