It appears that the axe has fallen and CBC has cancelled some of it’s (at least in my opinion) best series. Judging from comments and articles at various sites, it seems that I’m not the only disappointed viewer out there either.
Loss of Intelligence
As I had eluded to in an earlier post, CBC has cut my favourite show Intelligence along with recently introduced shows jPod and MVP. Despite having very little promotion, Intelligence was managing to consistently pull in a respectable 350,000 viewers. International broadcasters have also come knocking looking to syndicate the critically acclaimed show. While 350,000 viewers is not a blockbuster success compared to Rick Mercer pulling in over a million viewers per episode, it still is a sizable audience considering that number 30 in the top 30 programs which include all of rebroadcast American shows like American Idol, rings in at around 800,000 viewers.
Lights out in the jPod
My other disappointment is the cancellation of jPod. Even after being slated for the horrible Friday night slot, jPod was pulling in almost 300,000 viewers. Pretty good for a quirky show aimed at a more specific and targeted demographic. I must admit that it took a bit of time to warm up to it but it has turned into a show I really enjoy. I highly doubt that jPod would appeal to a mass audience but for attracting younger viewers to the CBC I think that it did quite well. I was starting to wonder how the plot might evolve beyond the Douglas Coupland novel but I guess now I’ll never find out. Shame…..
Are ratings the only goal?
There is a debate about whether ratings should be the only criteria used by the CBC since it is a public broadcaster which does has a different mandate than other private broadcasters. Heck if ratings are all that matter, why doesn’t the CBC just re-broadcast more crappy reality shows from south of the border that have “mass-appeal”. I’m sure that there will always be a spot in the ratings for yet another “I can’t sing/dance/do anything but vote for me because I’m from your region/province/city” show. I’m sure that re-runs of The Simpsons still bring in viewers too.
Then again, if only the Toronto Maple Leafs had a better team on the ice this year….
What does the future hold???
As John Doyle from the Globe and Mail wrote : “You’ve got to question CBC’s intelligence“.
Maybe I’ll have to get used to watching the boring, predictable good guy, bad guy everything wrapped up in an hour shows like Law & Order or CSI. Then again, maybe I should just give up on television altogether.
Update (March 26): Perhaps there is another reason for the cancellation of Intelligence? There may also be a sliver of hope left for the series as well… just not at the CBC. Haddock mentions his critically acclaimed Intelligence series just might be back for a third season. I hope so.
