The latest and greatest version of WordPress was released on Tuesday. Version 2.3 of WordPress adds native tagging support which includes importers for tags created with Ultimate Tag Warrior, Jerome’s Keywords, Simple Tags and Bunny’s Technorati Tags plugins. Now that native tagging support is available, I think that I will be doing some re-organization of my categories and adding tags to my posts.
Another added feature of WP 2.3 is notification of WordPress and plugin updates. WordPress updates notifications could be easily seen from the Dashboard but plugin updates was a much more tedious process. This will be a nice usability enhancement. The next logical step is automatic upgrading ala Firefox. I can’t wait for that day.
Also WordPress has finally helped out with search engine optimization by including a feature called canonical URLs which allows users to enforce preferences such as no www URLs. This feature will also allow redirects for post slug changes and more intelligent handling of incomplete URLs.
Other notable improvements in WordPress 2.3 is an advanced WYSIWYG editing toolbar.
Looks like a nice release with some nice new features. I’m looking forward to the upgrade.
